Apple Picking ~ MD Family Photographer

So while I wait on permission to blog mini-sessions (it was an amazing day!) I thought I would share more personal photos of my boys. I’m just going to warn you that you might see a ton of photos on the blog of them in the future 🙂  A month or so ago some friends came into town to help with the boys and stuff around the house (an amazing gift!!!!) and on one of those days I just needed out of the house. I LOVE Fall and was so bummed that I wasn’t going to get to drive to Charlottesville. I love that area of VA so much & in the Fall it is breathtaking, but I digress. One of my other favorite activities is going to an apple orchard & picking apples/sampling all of their goodies.  Apples, cinnamon, pumpkin – seriously whats not to love 🙂  Anyways, one of the days our friends were here we loaded up the boys and went to Homestead Farm.  Was so much fun & worth the DC rush hour traffic on the way back.  I took a few photos while we were there that I thought I would share.

Cold Jonagold apples are my favorite!

It was an overcast day but that meant there weren’t many people there so the boys weren’t exposed to everyone’s sick germs – preemie win 🙂

The boys worked oh so hard at sleeping while I picked.

Growing up in Florida I always hated that when it was my birthday there were always pumpkins and gourds as the picture for October on the calendar.  Looking back now it was because I had no idea of the joy Fall brought.  In Florida it was still low 90s & we could still swim.  Now knowing what Fall truly is it is by far my favorite season and I love pictures of gourds 🙂

At this point I was a sweaty mess from walking around and it was the boys feed time but I wanted one picture of us.  I am having to learn to be okay with looking like I just ran a marathon in pictures, because well I kinda just did 🙂

Eli & Josh ~ MD Newborn Photographer

I am so excited to share with you our boys newborn photos.  Since they were in the NICU so long we didn’t get to do the traditional newborn photos that I do with clients but I am in love with what we did get 🙂  The boys were 2.5 month old when we did these photos.  The boys are doing well and growing like weeds (at 3.5 month they are over 24″ long and 15 lbs!).  Each day there seems to be something new and melts our hearts just a little more.  Enjoy 🙂

Since all of our birth announcements have now gone out I can share our announcement. After years of designing birth announcements/receiving them it was a huge deal for me to be able to design & send our own.

The boys have arrived! ~ DC Newborn Photographer

Hallelujah the boys have arrived safely!  As scheduled I had a c-section (required with mono-mono twins) during the morning on Tuesday July 15th.  I am not even sure how to describe my emotions that day.  The c-section itself was pretty overwhelming to say the least.  Due to the high risk nature of mono-mono and twins we had quite a few people in the OR and it was all a lot to take in.  I remember asking my doctor as they were administering the spinal if I was truly in fact pregnant 🙂  Lets just suffice it to say that it was surreal and overwhelming.  At 9:11am I heard the cry I’ve been waiting to hear for almost a decade – the cry of my child. Elijah Alexander was first out weighing 4 lbs 12 oz and 17.5 in long.  His brother, Joshua Paul, came at 9:12am weighing 4 lbs 11 oz and was also 17.5 in long.  The umbilical cords were twisted like a candy cane, but there were no knots!!!!  We were all shocked and so incredibly thankful to God for protecting them.  After a very quick hello to mommy the boys were rushed off to the NICU to be evaluated.  We were so thankful that both boys were breathing room air on their own and only needed a little support for lung pressure.  Since then we have been living the NICU life (kuddos to anyone who has done this!!!  It is not easy to say the least) and driving back and forth daily.  Both boys make huge strides everyday.  They are both breathing without any pressure support as of yesterday and are up to “full feeds” (they start on IV nutrition the first couple days and then slowly introduce breast milk/formula through a feeding tube until they reach 40ml per feeding).  We hope to start feeding by mouth by next Tuesday and then the journey of learning to breathe/suck/swallow at the same time begins.  In utero this ability starts to develop around 34 weeks so that is when they let us start trying to feed via mouth.  The doctors are hoping that they will go home around 36-37 weeks, but it really depends on how quickly the boys master their breathing while eating.

Thank you for all your prayers!!!!  We still need prayers as the boys are not out of the woods yet but the doctors are very encouraging and say they are doing amazing for 32 weekers.  We have been warned that the NICU life can be a roller coaster and some days the boys might have to be back on pressure support for breathing/lung pressure but for now we are celebrating and praying that they will only make forward strides. We all can’t wait to have them home with us and start life as a family.  Here are a few pictures from my iphone. Hoping to get some with my “fancy” camera soon 🙂

Josh – 3 days old holding my finger as we snuggled and 4 days old listening to Daddy sing him Johnny Cash 🙂

Eli at 4 days old smiling that he got his nose cannula out and his face was finally free of breathing tubes 🙂  The orange tube is their feeding tube and is moved to the nose once they have been off of respiratory help for a few days.

One week old!!!  Eli is on the right (he had to have an IV in his head because he kept pulling the others loose – they are feisty little guys 🙂 ) and Josh on the left.  Everyone keeps asking if they look identical and I would say from this they sure do 🙂

Josh giving Mommy a big grin yesterday as the doctor removed his nose cannula.  So excited for both boys to be free of breathing machines 🙂

Pregnancy update & navigating the unknown…

Now that we are almost at 20 weeks (crazy that this pregnancy is half over!) I thought I would give you guys an update 🙂  The first trimester brought a ton of morning sickness that thankfully I think is just ending.  I have gone a few days without anything to help the nausea so I am hoping it is finally ending.  We got exciting news on week 17 – we are having boys!  My husband ended up not being with me for that ultrasound, so when I left I stopped by Carters (love their baby clothes!) and picked up a little shirt to tell my husband they were boys.  It was such a special moment when he opened the bag.  This is an iPhone picture I snapped of my husband that day – can you tell he is excited? 🙂

announcing it is a boy

So the news that they are boys is the great news that we got in week 17.  The hard news is that the doctor thinks our twins have a rare condition called “mono-mono” (otherwise known as “momo twins”).  What that means is that both of the twins are not only sharing the same placenta (making them identical), but they are also sharing the same amniotic sac.  When they are sharing the same sac they have a very high risk for a lot of complications.  One complication is, they can steal blood flood from each other and deprive one twin of proper nutrients (also called Twin to Twin Syndrome). A bigger problem is since umbilical cords are free floating in the womb they can get entangled in each other and form knots which cuts off the life line to one or both babies (this also leads to cord compression and can slowly cut off the lifeline).  These are just some of the side effects.  It has all been very scary these past couple weeks as we have processed these new changes.  The chance of having identical twins is .3% of all pregnancies in the US each year.  The chance of having “momo twins” is 1% of the .3%.  Leave it to my kids to distinguish themselves early 🙂

So, what does this mean for my pregnancy and business?  Well, it means that most likely somewhere around 24 weeks I will be checked into the hospital for the duration of my pregnancy.  They wait until 24 weeks because if they are born 24 weeks and after their is a chance at saving their life.  If they are born before 24 weeks they are almost guaranteed not to survive.  For now I am at home on “limited activity”/”modified bed rest”.  Basically it means I can still go about my life for the most part, but I shouldn’t be standing on my feet for long periods at a time, walking a ton (a mile at most and very leisurely), and the moment I feel tired I should lay down and rest.  They don’t want me exhausting myself if at all possible.  So, this means that last weekend was last time shooting a session for awhile.  I have been able to contact all my clients who had sessions scheduled and they were all great about it (THANK YOU!!!!).  Now I am just at home editing the sessions and wedding that have been already done and getting things in order at my house before I get checked into the hospital (oh and attending a ton of doctor appointments:) ).  It has already been a huge adjustment to me and I am having to learn to accept help (which is not always easy).  The boys are guaranteed to be early and the latest my doctor will let them stay in me is around 32 weeks.  They will monitor the boys and make a decision on when to take them based on how they/umbilical cords are doing.  Either way we are looking at a NICU stay.

As of Monday both boys were healthy and measuring the same size (important factor in identicals).  They keep the sonographer busy during ultrasounds since they like to move around so much 🙂  I will keep the blog updated at different points throughout our journey and can’t wait to share pictures of these sweet miracle boys.  My family and I covet your prayers for a safe and healthy pregnancy!  Thank you:)
